Background

Established in 1985,the Center for American Studies(CAS) at Fudan University has been one of the key institutions for American studies in China. It has been headed since then by Prof.XieXide, former President of the University and a graduate of Smith College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The development of the CAS has been greatly facilitated by the fund applied for through the Fudan Foundation in WashingtonD.C. from the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad(ASHA) under the Agency of International Development(AID). A new building for the CAS was completed and put into use in May 1995.


Missions

Since the very beginning of its establishment , the CAS has gradually identified the following missions as the goal so fits endeavor.

Research

To promote sustained and in-depth research on various aspects of the United States and Sino-USrelations.

Teaching

To educate and train Chinese students with a sound knowledge in relevant fields, analytical skills and language competence necessary for abetter understanding of the United States.

Exchange

To foster exchanges between scholars and students from China and the UnitedStates.

Consultation

To offer consultation to the government and other institutions concerned with the United States as a means of assistance in their policy-making process.

Coordination

To coordinate academic activities among faculty members of the University, who are interested in American studies.


Programs

The CAS draws on the multi-disciplinary strengths of Fudan University in promoting and coordinating studies about the United States.Atpresent,the following research programs have been created.

Program on U.S.Politics and Diplomacy

It focuses its research on U.S.political institutions and foreign policies, especially onther elations between China and the United States.


Program on U.S.Economy

It concentrates its efforts towards the studies on both the macro/micro-dimensions of U.S.economy and Sino-US economic relations.


Program on Arms Control and Regional Security

It carries out research on the issues of U.S.defense policy,nuclear arms control and disarmament, nuclear nonproliferation and limitation of conventional arms transfers.


Program on U.S.Society and Culture

It covers such fields as U.S.culture and society, U.S.religion ,U.S.Protestant missionary movements in China and history of Sino-UScultural exchanges.
